Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

Instructions to Assessors

Evidence Guide

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Assessment must confirm the ability to carry out all weapon drills as listed in the Range Statement; to fire the weapon using, as a minimum, linked ball ammunition; to apply a variety of engagement techniques as described in the Range Statement; to fire, as a minimum, from any unsupported position; and to recognise limit of own authority.

Consistency in performance

Competency should be demonstrated over time in a range of actual live firing contexts. The operational activity is to take place over time allowing the individual to be assessed in a number of realistic operational scenarios.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed using live ammunition and in a simulated operational threat environment.

The sustained fire machine gun operator should be exposed to the extremes of the operational environment where a person is under physical and mental stress. The context of assessment is simulated due to the nature of this high-risk environment.

Specific resources for assessment

Access to a sustained fire machine gun, ammunition and a simulated operational environment.

Guidance information for assessment

Information that will assist or guide assessment will be written during Phase II of the Review of the PUA00 Public Safety Training Package.
